Five Things God Can’t Do

I was preaching one Sunday at another church.  After  the sermon and most of the people were out of the sanctuary, 2 middle school girls came up to me and one said, “OK Pastor Art, if God made everything in the universe then who made God?”  Then they smiled this wonderfully proud smile.  “Answer that one Pastor Art.”

I loved it that they were looking for answers.  My answer to that particular question is that, “Nobody created God. He has always been and will always be.”

Both of these girls were equally bright.  They both went to the same   High School and they both took the same college prep courses. They both had wonderful families, they both had exceptional opportunities.  Today one of those girls is at MIT.  The other girl is a heroin addict.

Our destiny is controlled by the choices we make.

Today I want to talk to you about 5 things God Cannot Do.

Sometimes a person may think, God can do everything! Meaning, there’s nothing that God cannot do.

But listen, There ARE some things that God puts a limitation or a boundary on Himself.  Things that it would be a contradiction in His character for Him to do.

A contradiction to who He is.

Here are five things God cannot do because they would be contradictory to His nature.

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:

“I have loved you with an everlasting love;

I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. -Jeremiah 31:3

  1. God cannot stop loving you.

Once in a while someone will say to me, “I don’t think God loves me.” Or someone else maybe did something that he or she should not have done and they’ll say, “I don’t think that God can love me anymore.”

The thing is, it is impossible for God not to love you.

It is impossible for God to stop loving you.

He didn’t make you for misery.  He made you for a personal love relationship to Him.  God is Love.  He cannot NOT love!

2. God cannot be put on your time schedule.

Your schedule starts at 6:30 AM.  Your bus arrives at 7:15.  Worship begins at 10:00.  Dinner is at 5:30.

We have schedules all around us.  We carry a phone with the time. Time is everywhere— on our stove, on our microwave, by our bed, on our TV, on our computer.

But we cannot put God on a schedule.  Only God knows the perfect time for something to happen for us.  Someone said to me last week.

“I have been praying for something to happen.  Praying for almost 2 years.  I kept asking God if he forgot about me.  Then last week it happened.  And it was perfect.  Another time would not have worked at all.”

God knows what He is doing in His time.

3.  God cannot get lost.

Because God made everywhere, He knows where everywhere is.  Including light years away.  And He knows where you are every second of everyday.

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me,

your right hand will hold me fast. – Psalm 139:7-10

If you say to Jesus, “would you go help my sister.”  He knows the way.  He won’t get lost.  He knows your sister and He knows where she is.  You may not know, but He does.

We have had a missionary in Southern Sudan in Africa.  Two years ago due to war in that region he and his family fled.  They had to leave their home country.  I pray for them every day.  I don’t know where they are.  But Jesus does.

4.  God cannot lose anything.

We’ve all lost stuff.  Our wallet, keys, phone, homework, our car at the mall or the airport.

Once I took our two youngest children to a very, large store.  Before I left, Carol told me, “Be sure to hold their hands all the time.”  Not a problem, I thought.  When we got to the store, I noticed something that really caught my attention.  I went over to look at it, when suddenly, I realized I didn’t have the kids with me anymore.  That is a jolting feeling!  Eventually, they popped out at me from under a clothes rack, but in the meantime I was trying to figure out how I was going to explain this to Carol.

And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.

– John 6:39

We can lose our way sometimes in life.  We’re not sure which way to turn or which direction to take, what move to make. Should I change jobs, school district for the kids, get married, drop a friendship?

Well, God knows perfectly what is best for you.

A young man called me last week.I hadn’t seen him for some time.  He doesn’t live here.  He said he needed to talk to me.  That he had been addicted to heroin for two years.  He has lost 2 jobs, he’s sleepy all the time, his body craves the drug. “It’s destroying me, “ he said.

He has really good parents.  They are faithful Christians.  He said, “ I am messing up my parents lives, my siblings lives.  I’ve been to rehab. I’ve thought of taking my own life.”

This kid is Hollywood handsome.  He is smart and articulate and gifted in many ways. I talked with him for awhile.  Then I talked to him about his faith in Jesus Christ.

I said to him, “God can’t lose anything, and He can’t lose you.”  Then I said to him, “And I don’t want you to lose Him.”

He was quiet for a moment, and then he said, “That’s why I called you.”

God can’t lose anything and He can’t lose you.

5. God can’t stop thinking of you.  NEVER.

Which brings us back to #1.

God cannot stop loving you.

Jesus Is Lord.

Amen!
